Isopods and millipedes

We carry tropical springtails, a wide variety of isopods and a few millipedes. All are captive bred and raised by us. We offer them for sale at shows we are vending, but also have availablity outside of shows. We can ship anywhere in the continental US, weather permitting. Please email us to order.

Isopod and springtail cultures we provide can be introduced directly to your vivarium, or can be used to start your own master culture. See the instructions here.

Springtails- Collembolla spp.

SPRINGTAILS

Springtails 4 oz starter culture- $5.

Collembola are tiny arthropods that thrive in wet, temperate conditions. A staple component of any bioactive soil clean up crew, they keep mold at bay and help break down waste. Springtails also make a great snack for dart frogs. We offer culture starters that can be used as a snack for your frogs, added directly to your tank, or used to start a larger culture to have as a back up food source or to replenish your bioactive soil as needed.

Dwarf White Isopods- Trichorhina tomentosa

Dwarf white isopods

30ct- $10.

These small isopods are about 1/8″ as adults. They thrive in damp, humid conditions and reproduce quickly. They make fantastic vivarium janitors and are a staple for most vivariums we have running here.

Rough Isopods- Porcellio scaber

Dalmation Isopods

Dalmatian (pictured) 12ct- $15 SOLD OUT

Gray 20ct- $10 SOLD OUT

These are quick producers and tolerate a wide range of environments. They are voracious protein seekers and ideally should not be kept with very small or delicate inhabitants.

Zebra Isopods- Armadillidium maculatum

Zebra Isopods

12ct – $20 SOLD OUT

These are relatively slow producers and slow growers but are quite hardy. Moderate humidity is best but lower humidity is acceptable as long as a humid area is available. A culture will take a month or so to start producing offspring but they will take several months to mature.

Powder Blue Isopods- Porcellionides pruinosus

IMG_4771.JPG

20ct- $10.

These are a hardy species that can tolerate a wide range of environments, from humid dart frog enclosures to arid leopard gecko set ups. They are extremely quick to reproduce and grow. Their softer exoskeleton and quick reproduction makes them an excellent choice to culture as a feeder or to use in an enclosure where they may get eaten.

Costa Rican Purple- Isopoda spp.

30ct – $10.

This species is tiny, smaller than even the dwarf whites. They tolerate a wet environment well and reproduce fairly quickly. They spend most of their time burrowed in the soil. They have a softer exoskeleton than other isopods and are suitable as a feeder as well as a janitor.

Common Isopod- Armadillidium vulgarae

Common Isopod

12ct – $5.

This is your typical backyard Rolly Polly/ Common Woodlouse/ Pill Bug. The benefit of using captive bred individuals instead of catching them from outside is that any environmental contaminants that they may have been exposed to/ingested have been bred out over a couple generations. This is a fairly prolific species but slow to grow to maturity. They tolerate a wide range of environments.

Little Sea Isopod- Cubaris murina

Cubaris murina

12ct- $15 SOLD OUT

This adorable little isopod thrives in moderate to high humidity, but seems to spend a fair amount of time in drier areas as well. They produce small clutches and reproduce slowly.

Clown Isopod- Armadillidium klugii

Montenegro

12ct – $80.

These Isopods prefer their environment dry and with good ventilation. We provide a corner with damp sphagnum moss and mist once or twice a week but otherwise the substrate is dry. The are slow growers and slow producers.

Smooth Isopod- Porcellio laevis

79D92C8F-1544-4D76-B66C-941351C5FB68

Orange (pictured)  20ct- $15

Gray 20ct- $10

These large Isopods like to burrow. They also move fast, reproduce fast and grow fast. They tolerate a wide range of environments and are an easy species to keep.  These features make them ideal for vivariums where they may get eaten. An 8oz culture will contain at least 20 individuals.

Ornate Isopods – Porcellio ornatus

AC6FC0E2-8D80-45B0-949B-EF5CD8E05770

High Yellow 12ct- $50

These large isopods need a dry environment with good ventilation. We provide a corner with damp sphagnum moss and mist once or twice a week but otherwise the substrate is dry. The are quick growers and very prolific.

Greenhouse Millipedes- Oxidus gracilis

27F04E99-C643-4680-9A38-085E388A1357

10ct- $15

These millipedes thrive in damp/humid environments and are a very effective addition to any clean up crew. (I don’t recommend them for enclosures with rare/delicate plants, as they may consume seedlings).

Bumblebee Millipedes – Anadenobolus monilicornis– coming soon!

Ivory Millipedes – Chicobolus spinigerus– coming soon!

Desert Millipedes – Orthoporus ornatus- coming soon!
